The Netherlands: Grevelingen Lake

Dive in The Netherlands, Grevelingen: Dreischor: November 12, 2006

Today we go to Grevelingen another time, but this time to another place: Dreischor. There are reef balls and there is a pumping station. We leave at the carpool parking in Kontich, only with a delay of 30 minutes. We leave together with the whole group at 09:30 to Antwerp, then Bergen op Zoom and then via Goes to Dreischor. We make a detour of 5 minutes and everybody arrives at the same time at the dive spot of Dreischor. There is nothing here, no toilet, no pub, just pasture, a dike and two diving spots. We first check out how the water is at Dreischor at Grevelingen: not so good today. We are a big group today and we (among others) are only beginners. There are all high waves here on the ‘sea’ of sometimes about 4 meters. For people with plenty of experience this is not an issue, but for beginners is that something else. So for all divers sake we go to another place/ they say the water will be better at Scharendijke and the dive will be a lot easier. OK, so we drive to Scharendijke. We arrive there and today the dive will be with the three of us and Phillip and Leo. Good, it’s never bad to dive with someone else. We prepare and walk to the other side of the dike and just after the pier we enter the water. The waves are less high than at Dreischor, but still relatively high. We have trouble to put on our fins, but after about 5 minutes it works our OK and everybody is fine to go down. A little to early to be OK, because only after 2 meters we lost each other because of the sand and the weeds in the water. The second time is not successful either, but after the third time we go slowly down and all together and we’re OK at the bottom. Now we follow the path around the pier. There is no clear view, not nearly as clear as the previous time. We swim last in the row, so we get the most sand and weeds in our face and that is not really good to see something. In short: shrimps, lobsters, crabs, just like last time. Also Phillip points out a long legged spider crab. The first time we saw this. Cool. We also see starfish and sea squirts and some smaller fish – we need to pay a bit more attention to memorize which species. We’re only novices, no? The dive was not that good: we were shifted about under water like we were in a tank. In addition to that we met another group of divers and we almost lost Phillip and Leo. Not really the best conditions, but that happens. We dive until right n between the first and the second pier and then go up. It started to get cold and the air consumption was also rather high, so we had to get out anyway. We were able to practice another time, but not in good conditions. Timo even falls when coming to land, but he’s not hurt. We change clothes, eat a sandwich, drink some hot chocolate and have a drink at the Kabbelaar. At about 15:00 we drive back home, first we pass by Walem to drop off our equipment. This time we don’t need to pay anything. Thanks Dimi. See you next dive.
